As a good ‘ol family from Alberta, everyone in our haus-hold loves a good barbecued steak… even during our cold, winter arctic temps, my hubbie will be out there in his snow boots throwing a steak on the “barbie” (shout out to our Aussie friends!). One of our favourite cuts of beef is definitely the flank steak. It’s fairly economical and feeds a crowd. That said, I believe flank steak MUST be marinated in advance to create a tasty, juicy and tender bite!

I love this recipe as well for its simplicity, all of the ingredients used in this marinade are things you most likely already have in your kitchen! When you use simple but good quality ingredients, you will get a better result. Marinating your steaks helps create a tender and flavourful bite!

I’ve played around with many different recipes over the years, and have come up with what I (and my family and friends as they ask for this often!) think is the PERFECT marinade (and the only one you’ll ever need!!) for this delicious cut of meat. Let’s get into it!

The Best Marinated Flank Steak
Equipment
- 1 large ziploc bag
- 1 small mixing bowl
- 1 shallow baking pan
- 1 bbq!
Ingredients
- 2 ½ – 3 lbs flank steak
- ¾ cup soy sauce
- ¾ cup red wine
- ½ cup oil (Spectrum Naturals Refined High Oleic Safflower Oil)
- 2 tbsp grated fresh ginger
- 2 tbsp finely chopped garlic
- 2 ½ tbsp brown sugar
- Optional: 1 tbsp chili oil or paste, sriracha or hot sauce to give it a little kick!
- salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Score meat with shallow, diagonal criss-cross cuts at roughly 2” intervals.
- Place steak into a large Ziploc bag.
- In a bowl, mix all remaining ingredients together, seasoning to taste with salt & pepper.
- Pour into ziploc bag, making sure the steak is fully covered by the marinade and seal tightly.
- Place the bag into a shallow baking pan.
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours but preferably up to a day before grilling.
- Flip the bag of steak over once or twice during its’ chilling time.
- Take steak out of the fridge at least an hour before barbequing, and bring it to room temp.
- BBQ meat to medium rare and then cover and let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing it thinly across the grain.
Notes

Steak pairs well with so many different sides, some of my go-tos are a classic Caesar salad, a light shrimp salad (bonus: this is basically a mini surf & turf haha!), truffled mashed potatoes (you can find my truffle mashed recipe HERE) or some type of pasta salad! And of course, some sort of delish sauce to dip your tender steak into! This sawmill sesame steak sauce is my families fave!
Happy marinating,
